About Swami Vivekananda  Swami Vivekananda was an Indian monk, Hindu spiritual teacher, and the chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of Indian spiritual traditions to the Western world and is considered to be one of the most influential figures in modern Hinduism.  Vivekananda was born in Kolkata, India, in 1863. He was a brilliant student and graduated from the University of Calcutta with a degree in philosophy. After graduating, he became a disciple of Ramakrishna, who taught him about the Hindu scriptures and about the importance of meditation and devotion. In 1893, Vivekananda travelled to the United States to attend the World's Parliament of Religions.
